Home Secretary Priti Patel has said access to the UK’s asylum system “should be based on need, not the ability to pay people smugglers”.
She was speaking in the House of Commons to set out government plans to change the way people applying for asylum in the UK are dealt with.
For the first time, people seeking protection as refugees would have their claim assessed based on how they arrived.
