In the year 441, Saint Patrick is said to have spent 40 days and nights on an Irish mountain praying for the folly of man. That mountain was Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, on Ireland’s rugged west coast.
On the last Sunday in July each year, thousands climb the mountain. Some participate as penance, some go barefoot and, once at the top, you can avail of Catholic mass and buy a bottles of fizzy orange. However you get to the top, you may pray that the tricky terrain doesn’t mean you make your way back down on one of the stretchers provided by the Knights of Malta.
Bernard Falk joined the pilgrims on their arduous journey in the summer of 1975 for Nationwide, making it to the top (and back to the bottom again) relatively unscathed.
