Speilberg on SUCCESS: “If I hadn’t made a movie that was such a quantum success [JAWS], I wouldn’t have had the freedom to decide what movie I wanted to make next [Close Encounters]. I would have been a director for hire. Success allows you to get the financing even if the studio doesn’t believe in the project, but you do.”

Speilberg on JAWS: “We were 100 days over schedule, anybody else would have fired the director when that director was 7 days over schedule.”
