Timo Werner is the first German to score two penalties in a single European Cup/Champions League match since Lothar Matthaus for Bayern Munich v Real Madrid in April 1987.

Two penalties from Timo Werner helped Chelsea to a comfortable Champions League win over Rennes as Frank Lampard’s side opened up a three-point lead at the top of their group.

Midfielder Jorginho missed from the spot in Krasnodar last week and he watched on as Werner twice buried from 12 yards.

Rennes were reduced to 10 men when Dalbert collected his second yellow when conceding the second penalty and from that point on the game was over.

Tammy Abraham made it three from a fine Reece James cross as Chelsea made it seven points from their opening three games.

The only bad news of the night came before kick-off, with Germany midfielder Kai Havertz confirmed to have caught Covid-19.

More to follow.
