Ineos Grenadiers’ Adam Yates retained the lead of the Volta a Catalunya after stage five, with team-mate Geraint Thomas third overall.
The stage was won by Lennard Kamna of Bora-Hansgrohe, with Britain’s James Knox seventh for Deceuninck-Quick Step.
Bora-Hansgrohe were not allowed to race in Friday’s E3 Saxo Bank Classic race after Britain’s Matthew Walls tested positive for coronavirus.
The race was won by Quick Step’s Kasper Asgreen after a superb breakaway.
The Dane, 26, beat a group containing one of cycling’s best riders in Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Fenix.
Bora’s Walls, 22, another of Britain’s bright young talents, was due to take part in the one-day race in Belgium alongside Ineos’ Tom Pidcock, 21, who finished 25th, nearly three minutes down.
In the Volta a Catalunya, Yates, 28, finished two minutes down on Kamna with the other main rivals for the overall winners’ green and white jersey, including Thomas, 34, and Hugh Carthy of EF Education-Nippo, 26.
Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome, riding for new team Israel Start Up Nation, is now more than 40 minutes down overall after a disappointing race so far.
In the Coppi e Bartali stage race in Italy, Ineos’ Ethan Hayter came fourth in the penultimate stage after winning Thursday’s sprint.
Hayter, 22, is third in the general classification, 11 seconds behind leader Jonas Vingegaard of Jumbo-Visma.
Meanwhile, Tour de France organisers ASO have announced the race’s ‘grand depart’ will take place in Bilbao, northern Spain, in 2023.
