Max Verstappen got the defence of his world title up and running with victory at the previous race in Saudi Arabia, and now F1 returns to the Australian city of Melbourne for the third grand prix of the season.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was also strong in third, holding off Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who had qualified in pole position.
Defending constructors’ champions Mercedes, meanwhile, will be hoping for a change in fortunes after George Russell finished fifth in Saudi Arabia with Lewis Hamilton a disappointing 10th.
