Bournemouth 0-0 Crystal Palace (11-10 pens): Cherries through in amazing shootout

Both goalkeepers missed their penalties in the shootout

Bournemouth beat Crystal Palace 11-10 in an amazing Carabao Cup shootout after a goalless draw to set up a third-round tie with Manchester City.

After all 20 outfield players scored, Wayne Hennessey saved Bournemouth keeper Asmir Begovic’s spot-kick, but then blazed his own over the bar.

David Brooks scored his second kick of the shootout and Begovic saved Luka Milivojevic’s effort to send the Championship side through.

They face holders City next week.

The excellent finishing in the shootout was nowhere to be seen in 90 minutes. Bournemouth dominated with 17 shots to Crystal Palace’s four – but only three were on target.

The only time they managed to get the ball in the net, Sam Surridge was flagged offside.

Stacey had a well-hit effort saved by Hennessey.

Palace forced Begovic into only one save, with the goalkeeper denying debutant Nya Kirby in the first half.

And so to a shootout the game went, with 20 flawless kicks before the keepers had their go. Hennessey pulled off a good save from Begovic but missed the chance to be a hero when his effort flew miles over the crossbar.

Begovic took his opportunity to be the hero instead when he denied Palace’s first-choice penalty taker Milivojevic.

‘City game a great challenge’

Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall:

“As a manager and player, you want to pit yourself against the best teams and the best people in the industry you are in.

“It will be such a tough game, as it always has been whenever we have gone to Manchester City, but it will be a great challenge for us.

“It will be a great opportunity for the players who are selected to play and a chance to go and give a good account of themselves.”

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson:

“Every penalty was almost perfect so congratulations to both teams on that, and congratulations to Bournemouth on winning the game.

“They deserved to win it – they played very well and I can only wish them luck up at Manchester City next week.

“I am not happy or I don’t think it is a good idea the third round of the competition was announced before we played the second round. I don’t understand the benefit of doing that.”
