Historically, surfing has had an image of a sport and lifestyle that is in tune with, and protects, oceans and the environment. But some surfers say the sport relies on boards and wetsuits mass-produced from petrochemicals that create tonnes of waste every year.
If you add in the international travel needed to enjoy the best waves, the average surfer’s carbon footprint is said to be 50% greater than the average person’s.
It has also been estimated that more than 8,000 tonnes of neoprene wetsuits end up in landfill every year
