Cricket Scotland: Anjan Luthra is new chair as rebuild begins after racism report

Luthra played for Scotland at age-grade level up to the Under-19 team

New chair Anjan Luthra has told BBC Scotland he has “the tools to really rebuild” Cricket Scotland.

The Glasgow-born 31-year-old, who runs a London-based media company, takes on the role for a two-year period.

It follows an independent review commissioned by Sportscotland which found the governance and leadership of the sport to be institutionally racist.

“This should never have happened and I am angry,” said Luthra, who will lead the search for new board members.

“We are going to make sure that things are rectified and they are rectified quickly.”

The previous board of the governing body resigned in July, the day before the publication of a report detailing many examples of institutional racism in the Scottish game.

“I’ve represented the country before at cricket,” added Luthra, who played age grade up to under-19s. “I feel that I have all the tools to really rebuild. I empathise with the victims that have been very brave and have gone through some deep suffering and pain, and I want to be the person to lead this organisation through the next chapter.

“We must be open about the problems facing the organisation and cricket in Scotland. We must listen, empathise and understand what is going on.

“I’m full of passion and ambition and I’m hoping to ensure that this flows down the organisation, that we build a very positive culture of people that are passionate, intense and work quickly.”

The Plan4Sport Changing the Boundaries review had called for a new board to be in place by September.

“I believe that for the chair to be part of the recruitment process is actually very positive,” said Luthra.

“Ultimately it’s the chair and the board that are responsible for holding the organisation to account, so it’s very important that this small group of people are aligned and have a diverse set of skills and are all as ambitious as each other to drive the organisation forward. I’m in Edinburgh next week meeting a large number of candidates.

“After that we need to ensure that we have a long-term and stable CEO.

“I will be very transparent, very available to all the important stakeholders as we implement the action plan. My first priority is to make sure that everything in the report is implemented quickly to a very high standard.

“Then I am going to be looking at how to commercialise the organisation, how to bring in more capital.

“There is going to be a step shift change in momentum and intensity. I’ve always moved quickly in my career and I’m ready to start taking this forward at a pace the organisation hasn’t seen before.”
