Harlequins: Prem side’s results ‘not acceptable’, club hierarchy admits

Harlequins’ results this season have not been acceptable, the club’s hierarchy has admitted after Saturday’s 66-21 hammering by Northampton.

Quins conceded 10 tries against Saints, have only won two Prem games this season, and have shipped more than 40 points in each of their past three league matches.

Jason Gilmore’s team are eighth in the table at the halfway stage of the season, only five points ahead of bottom side Newcastle Falcons.

“Performances and results in the men’s team are not at the level we expect and are not considered acceptable by anyone within the club,” said the statement,, external signed off by chief executive officer Laurie Dalrymple and chairman David Morgan.

“Everyone is working tirelessly and urgently to address this, and to deliver the necessary on-pitch improvements.”

Saturday’s loss to Northampton followed heavy defeats against Bristol Bears in the annual “Big Game” at Twickenham [40-14] and away at Sale Sharks [43-17].

“Whilst some elements of change will take a relatively short period of time to implement, others will take longer,” the statement added.

“It is critical that such change is carefully considered and will evidently deliver the performance levels we are committed to.

“The board, players, coaches and staff all share the disappointment felt by our supporters. Your support and continued patience during this challenging period for the club is recognised and greatly appreciated.”

Gilmore took over as senior coach after the departures of director of rugby Billy Millard and head coach Danny Wilson last year.

Harlequins are next in action against Cape Town Stormers in the European Champions Cup on Sunday.
