Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin is set to miss the rest of the season with another injury, having just returned from a 20-month lay-off.
The Ivorian, 25, made a substitute appearance against Crystal Palace last week, his first action since August 2019, after thigh and Achilles issues.
But after sustaining a knee contact injury in training on Saturday he missed Monday’s draw against Brighton.
Gbamin will undergo a scan on Tuesday to learn the extent of the injury.
“We are really really sad, I am too because he was training well, he was showing good quality, he was happy and then back again another injury,” manager Carlo Ancelotti said.
“He’s trying to have a scan. I don’t know for sure, but the season for him is finished.”
The game against Palace was only his third Everton appearance after signing from Mainz for £25m in the summer of 2019.
He was set to return last summer after recovering from a thigh problem which required surgery but an Achilles injury in training kept him out for a further 11 months.
Everton also lost defender Yerry Mina during the goalless draw at Brighton with Ancelotti suggesting he will miss “a few weeks”.
Furthermore, Toffees striker Cenk Tosun has had surgery in Turkey after rupturing his patella tendon while playing for loan club Besiktas on Sunday.
The Turkey forward, 29, will now return to the UK to be assessed by Everton’s medical team.
He was set to spend the rest of this season on loan at Besiktas, for whom he played for four years before joining Everton in 2018.
