Neil Gourley says he is not going to the Olympics in Paris “just to be a tourist”.

The 29-year-old Scot’s 1500m win at June’s UK Athletics Championships made sure of his place in Team GB’s athletics squad for the Games in France.

Gourley took silver over the distance at the European Indoor Championships last year.

“I’m lacking that major medal at a global championship and this would be a great year to do it,” he told BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound.

“I’m definitely looking to go to this Olympics not just to be a tourist.

“There’s ambitions there of medals and that’s what we’re looking to do there.”

Compatriots Josh Kerr, 26, and Jake Wightman, 29, are the past two world champions over 1500m and both join Gourley in the British team.

Wightman will run in the 800m in the French capital with Gourley, Kerr and George Mills taking the 1500m spots.

“It’s going to be an incredible challenge,” added Gourley.

“The level is so high at the moment in the world but I’ve been making progress year on year.

“Some of my colleagues in Jake and Josh have shown that level is achievable. I’m aspiring to get to that and putting in the work just now to make that happen.”
