Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso says he has spoken with club president Florentino Perez this week as pressure builds around his position in charge of the first team.

A recent dip in form – marked by three consecutive draws in the league – has raised concerns inside and outside the club.

Questions are being asked about whether Alonso can flourish as a long-term successor to Carlo Ancelotti following his appointment in the summer.

“We’re struggling, that’s the reality. We need unity. That’s what we’re focused on to be more consistent and how to win away from home in La Liga,” Alonso said.

The manager said conversations with Perez have remained constructive.

“I have spoken to him again and the conversations are very positive, with a very good tone,” Alonso said. “That’s what we’ve talked about, turning the results around.”

With a trip to San Mames to face Athletic Club on Wednesday, Alonso knows how important the next game is for Real, who have slipped just behind Barcelona at the top of the league, with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid also striving for the summit.

“My focus is on tomorrow’s game, preparing with the team for what we have. We know where we are in the season, there’s a long way to go,” Alonso said.

“It’s all very close and there are a lot of points still up for grabs, so a lot can happen.”

Alonso has also faced criticism regarding Jude Bellingham’s recent performances, but the coach defended the England midfielder amid local media scrutiny.

“I’m with him every day and I can see he’s eager. He shares the feeling of all the players and the team, after not winning, of not being happy,” Alonso said.

“But we have to help each other and we have to help Jude. The responsibility is huge.”
