Andy Murray is out of the Swiss Indoors after suffering a straight-set defeat by Roberto Bautista Agut in Basel.
The former world number one lost 6-3 6-2 to the Spaniard in the last 16.
Bautista Agut fought back from an early service break to win the first set before claiming breaks in Murray’s first and final service games of the second set.
Meanwhile British number one Cameron Norrie lost to Marcos Giron at the Vienna Open.
The 6-3 6-4 loss to the American in the second round is a setback to Norrie’s hopes of reaching next month’s ATP Finals.
Giron broke his opponent twice to take the first set and went on to secure victory after Norrie double-faulted at 3-3 in the second.
He will play Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4, in the quarter-finals.
Norrie is ranked 13th in the world, with only the top eight players making it to the end-of-year ATP Finals, being held in Turin during November.
Murray, 35, would have hoped to use the tournament in Basel to pick up some valuable ranking points in an attempt to break back into the top 32 and therefore be seeded for the Australian Open in January.
The Scot, making his first appearance at the indoor hard court event since 2005, made 29 unforced errors and was broken four times by his Spanish opponent.
It is a third successive loss for Murray to Bautista Agut, who improved his career record against Murray to 3-3, sealing his place in the Basel quarter-finals for a fourth time.
Bautista Agut will now face Brandon Nakashima or Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals.
Murray will next compete in the Paris Masters in Bercy next week, the final event of the regular ATP Tour season.
The Swiss Indoors – won a record 10 times by home favourite Roger Federer, who announced his retirement in September – is being held for the first time in three years following the coronavirus pandemic.
