Haunted by post-socialist nostalgia, 25-year-old director Hanwen Zhang returns to the factory town where he was born, in north-east China. According to oral history, Sheep Pen Town, in the Shuangyang District of Changchun City, was known in the 90s as ‘The First Line of China’. With a subtle irony and a nuanced approach, The First Line of China explores the history of a country and its ideology through the lens of a family and their hometown.
